moulding ./.?

For my first look which is based on dolls and schizophrenia I wanted to make my model look distressed and mad from the voices she here's which are driving her crazy and making her believe she is something she is not. Ive thought and looked at potentially creating an final image focusing on the back of my model and not actually being able to see her face. This is where the idea of making her look distressed and almost controlled by this doll came from in taking it out on her back making her bones stand out and focusing on her positioning and hair. Thinking about this idea meant i either had to find a model who's spine stood out a lot or i had to create this allusion myself on my model. The second option was the only one i found i could do as i already had a model in mind who had all the other elements i needed for my final images. I started looking at products that could create this effect, the top image shows some not very great quality photos of trying out putty on the skin. This putty is moulded and then applied to the skin where you can mould it into a shape and then smooth it down and work on top of. I practised using this on the wrist bone and placing it on the back where it seemed like it could work. This was a very quick practise so i wasn't sure if on the day it would actually 100% work or look right, but knew that if it did it could look really good in showcasing my characters identity.

Quick practise hair up-do

This was a quick practise hairstyle i done for one of the images for my first shoot which is going to be focused on the back of the head and the naked back of my model. I wanted to practise this style on real hair and see how the style would sit on the back of the head a photograph. This was put up very roughly and my model here has a lot shorter hair than the model i will be using. When doing it properly it will be neater in a sense but also more messy and in the way its put up with a perfectly straight parting line.

Japanese Horror

Here are some images from Japanese based horror films such as the grudge and the ring, which the Japanese version is called 'Ringu.' The film Ringu is a 1998 Japanese horror film Hideo Nakata, adapted from the novel ring by Kōji Suzuki. This film is considered the most frightening horror film in Japan according to a survey. These films i feel have a link to dolls and how i could design a doll inspired look/shoot with the long hair over the face, pale skin and big eyes etc. The two images at the bottom are not based from Japanese horror films but reminded me of these kind of horror films still with a girl placed in the corner of a room with her face covered making you anticipate the unknowing of what she will look like. The bottom image I love, I like the whole movement within the photo. Even though it doesn't show anything creepy or scary it has that element of fear with how the hair has been blown out, the angle and the styling of the girl within it.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is something many people suffer from and is a serious mental illness. Schizophrenia is something i want to look at as idea towards the final designs for my two characters for my Gothic horror project based on dolls/puppets. Instead of creating two characters i wanted to look at creating one character with a alter ego/Schizophrenia making them into two people. I feel this could be an interesting prospective to look at for a character and a photo portraying them as two people when actually being one person. This wont be my judgement of what i feel schizophrenia is in case it insults people it is purely just for creating a characters identity for a project that i can use not what i feel schizophrenic people are like etc. All images from below have been collected of google.

The Doll's House by Remi Rebillard
Here are a few images i have gathered for inspiration for my Gothic horror character shoots. These images showcase different poses and movements that could possibly be used within a shoot inspired by doll like movements. These images also have reference to fashion inspired photographs like the top two images, and more subject mattered images such as the rest focusing more on dolls and there mannerisms. I have used many sources to gather these images from as i wanted a range of different human doll like imagery. The bottom image is from a set of images called The Dolls House by Remi Rebillard where she has captured many different images of this girl posed in different doll like looking positions it chronicles a day in the life of a living doll.

Hair Design

Here are some quick Practise hair styles inspired by my Gothic horror dolls theme. There is a few different hairstyles that I played around with here on my dolly head. I wanted to experiment with keeping the hair quite girly and dolly looking how you would see a typical china doll hair etc. Most dolls have there hair curled, so I firstly curled the hair on my dolly head i then experimented with putting the hair up and backcombing it slightly. For my hair look i want it to have a similar look of dolls hair so i really need for my model to have long hair like most dolls. Keeping with the dolls theme i also at the same time want the hair to be contemporary and fashion like as it is being styled for a horror inspired music video.

Dolls heads ..

Caroline Saulnier By Rankin.

These are images from the Caroline Saulnier by Rankin book. These images link perfectly towards my clown statue/doll urban legends with the fact that these images have been made to look like dolly heads. This is shown within the make up and neck cut of and especially the hair where it has been edited to look like dolls hair especially around the hair line. These images have a hint of creepiness but also a touch of beauty show casing how dolls do have an underlying beauty with the lovely porcelain skin and usually thick hair.

Facechart's look 1 (The schizophrenic)

Here are two face charts i have done based on my 1st characters look and identity. They are both slightly dark and mad, i wanted to create some face charts for this look as an idea even though i doubt you will see the face for this character and idea.

DIESEL autumn/winter 2001

Imagery from the DIESEL autumn/winter collection stay young/save yourself campaign, Photography by Jean-Pierre Khazem. I got shown this campaign in relation to my project of the clown statue/dolls as the campaign shows real life models looking like dolls. There is something about this campaign even though it is advertising clothes etc it has a creepy feel with the faces and the bodies of the models and even some of the posing. This is how i feel dolls are perceived they can be beautiful but i find them very creepy also even when there not meant to be as this add shows.

'Fashion Film'

Gareth Pugh Autumn/Winter 2009 Film by Ruth Hogben.
Here is a fashion film by english fashion  designer Gareth Pugh that was created with Ruth Hogben. The film was made to show and promote Pugh's 09 fashion collection. I feel the film promotes horror movements while showcasing the clothing along with the music, this is what drew me in to this fashion film. I like the sounds along with the movements the models make and the various angles these are captured at flickering from fast to slow movements. I also like the use of the clothing and the shapes made with these it gives it a sense of style and horror by having the fashion film in black and white.

Alice Auaa presents British Gothic Tokyo Collection 2013 SS. By designer Yasutaka Funakoshi.

These images and the collection is obviously related to Alice and wonderland with the designs and also the name behind the collection which is  “Alice in wonder land in me”.  I see this clearly when i look at his pieces of work but i also see alot of gothic horror inspiration behind it which is the main factor that drew me into these designs and images. I see doll looking clothing with the dresses and a sense of unsettling horror like the models are haunted with the make-up, hairstyles and clothing. These were my three favourite looks of the show because of there overall styling and the fact it made me question and see ideas and other influences within the styling hair and make-up.

China dolls ...

Here are some images of china dolls taken at my grandads house. These china dolls are very old and are dolls I remember from my childhood of my grandad having in his house. They are quite creepy little dolls especially the two that sit together with matching outfits. China dolls are very pretty and delicate but have an unnerving spookiness about them that feels like there always watching you and there eyes are following you everywhere you are in the room.

Puppet scene marionette dance

Here is a video from the recent criminal minds of a puppet scene marionette dance. The puppets this man has made for his show are real humans that he has created into these imaginary puppets by dislocating there joints so they move around like dolls freely. Obviously I won't be doing this for my shoot to a real model but the movements are both striking and light but mainly very scary and disturbing to say the least but shows how puppets and dolls move around so freely with control. The music and the movements of the woman who has been made into a puppet are what I wanted to look at for poses or even a short clip for this project, this is a great episode of criminal minds that is also very twisted.

puppets

Looking at the subject of the clown doll/clown statue I felt that I wanted to research into  puppets as an idea towards designs. I decided to look at puppets due to the movements of them they are usually limp and can be emotionless. They also have a link to clowns and dolls curtain ways puppets are held and the creepiness of voices that people put on for them add a sense of unease. I like the movements that puppets have and the thought of puppets coming to life, both these pictures show a hand made puppet and also a human puppet strung in different positions . I think the way puppets are held and made to move with string is actually quite creepy and could look real interesting when captured in a photograph a lot like the one above.

Fear of clowns ?

While researching into my Urban legend and coming up with ideas and design processes for this project I wanted to consider both factors that could come from this, which is the clown and the Doll. Clowns I find to be an interesting prospect when it comes to fright factors as there are so many people who are terrified of clowns. They don't personally scare me but I wouldn't like to be alone with one or find one in a room with me, but when I think about being scared or what scares me there not something that would pop into my head. I have gathered photos of both fashion inspired clown shoots and also a scarier image of a clown which is what most people that our scared of them i feel would perceive them as looking like. When looking at clowns you can perceive them in different ways you can make them utterly terrifying, or you can actually make them quite a beautiful piece of work. This project requires me to do both of these outcomes I don't want to create a bloody mess of a shoot and end look, I want it to be thought out and have a sense of beauty but unease and make the viewer feel slightly tense and on edge.
